Guest Editorial: Pest Control in Dubai

Editor’s note: Pro Shield Pest Control Services was founded by Lassad Trabelsi in 2013 and has grown to become a leading pest control provider in Dubai. The company recently expanded and now services the city of Sharjah. Pro Shield provides residential and commercial services and is a member of NPMA and other associations. In the following guest editorial, Pro Shield shares challenges and opportunities with pest control in Dubai and why the company is succeeding.

Given the bustle of daily life, especially in a city such as Dubai, pest control services are much-needed. Of course, only skilled and methodical experts provide effective pest control services — and Pro Shield aims to deliver on quality. 

CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES. In the world of pest control, perhaps the biggest challenge is encountering places pests have infested. Pests not only expand rapidly when left alone, but they also have an instinct to find the most unique places to harbor. 

Our team has seen pest infestations so complex that the reach extends outside the premises (the home or commercial space) and throughout an entire floor or block. 

Sometimes the root of a pest spread is present within the clients’ spaces, growing in a basement, or attic, or even the drainage system, and spreading from there.

Another challenge we often encounter, and what adds to the difficulty of the first challenge, is pesticide resistance. In Dubai, this often is the result of homeowners making DYI treatments. They may use a weak product or a product that is not suitable to eliminate a certain pest type, or conduct inadequate pest treatment, not covering every nook and cranny. The result is that more pesticide-resistant pests propagate.

Our team also has been fortunate to have a wonderful base of loyal clients. Time and again since our founding, we have received opportunities to tackle pest problems in both domestic and commercial spaces — opportunities that provided us with recurring clients who rely on Pro Shield, and Pro Shield alone, for pest control solutions.

COMMONLY ENCOUNTERED PESTS. Given the hot and humid climate of the UAE, roaches are the most common issue. Worldwide, cockroaches are found in many types, but it’s the German cockroach that is most commonly found in the UAE, especially Dubai. 

We also encounter American cockroaches, but they are less common in the locality. Given that roaches are attracted to moisture, in damp places, the humidity of UAE is a chief reason for the abundance of German cockroaches. 

We always advise our clients and provide general information to the public (via our website and blog) to watch out for any signs of cockroaches in closed-off and damp places in residential and commercial settings. From drain pipes to basements to attics and garages, the least used and ventilated areas of any property are the ones most susceptible to roach infestations.

Bed bugs are also quite common in the UAE. The Pro Shield team has dealt with a large number of bed bug control service requests. The majority of clients calling for bed bug issues are domestic since homes contain not just mattresses but also upholstery items that attract bugs. 

Bed bugs are commonly found in Dubai apartment complexes. The other main source for bed bug infestations in the UAE are second-hand or passed-down furniture. We inform people often about the care that's needed when shopping at thrift stores or via online social media marketplaces. While sustainable and careful shopping practices are appreciated, extreme caution is necessary for furniture shopping; bed bugs can easily hitch a ride to, or be already present in, furniture.
